This is an archive of past FreeBSD releases; it's part of the FreeBSD Documentation Archive.
Restructured, reorganized, and parts rewritten by Jim Mock <jim@FreeBSD.org>, 17 January 2000.
Thank you for your interest in FreeBSD! The following chapter covers various items about the FreeBSD Project, such as its history, goals, development model, and so on.
FreeBSD is a 4.4BSD-Lite based operating system for the Intel architecture (x86) and DEC Alpha based systems. Ports to other architectures are also underway. For a brief overview of FreeBSD, see the next section. You can also read about the history of FreeBSD, or the current release. If you are interested in contributing something to the Project (code, hardware, unmarked bills), see the contributing to FreeBSD section.
